Romeo & Juliet Slot Review

Strangely enough, relatively highbrow medieval plays by William Shakespeare are not usually the stuff of online casinos. In the Romeo & Juliet slot, Blueprint Gaming decided to take the romance and love theme and run with it, using this iconic pair as inspiration. And we’ve found it makes for a nicely refreshing change.

More on the Game’s Blueprint

Romeo & Juliet, by Blueprint Gaming, is a slot game based on Shakespeare’s most famous play. If you’re not already familiar with the plot, it tells the story of two ill-fated lovers caught between feuding families who will never accept their union. It all ends in tragedy involving self-stabbing and poison, which is nodded to at points throughout this slot game without spoiling the focus on making some real cash.

Romeo & Juliet is a five-reel, 20-payline, online slot with no download needed to get going. There are numerous types of different slots, but in this one the game design includes a mini game, free spins, a wheel of fortune, and picking prizes with the alluring chance to bag up to 100 times your bet. Begin playing at anything from 0.20 to 500.00 per spin, and see if you can have better luck than the young, star-crossed lovers.

If you’re bored with the usual slot machine themes and are looking for something that isn’t the same old, same old, this will be right up your street – not least if you’re a lover of the bard himself. The setting is Juliet’s famed balcony in fair Verona. The Romeo & Juliet logo symbol takes on a super stacked formation on the reels, with five of these on a win line awarding you 20 times your bet. Not to be confused with the Romeo & Juliet logo is the symbol representing Romeo and Juliet themselves. This is the wild, and it replaces everything except the bonus symbol. Landing five of these will award you 25x your bet.

While the game’s storyline takes us to the warm climes of Italy, the creator of the software is the UK-based studio Blueprint Gaming. Forming part of Germany’s Gauselmann Group, the studio boasts a good track record featuring many successful, well-known games such as Slots of Gold and The Pig Wizard in its portfolio. Its games can be found in more than 100,000 land-based casinos across Europe, and as a brand it is certainly keen to aim for the less-worn pathways in terms of theme, content and design. This can be seen in Romeo & Juliet, a unique offering launched to the market in early 2018.

Playing for Real Money, Shakespeare Style

Play for real money for a chance to win big with Romeo & Juliet. This is a slot that contains several features. At any point in the base game, a lovers’ superspin feature may be randomly triggered, producing one of five different variations. With the Juliette wild, the symbols turn into wilds at the end of the spin, and can double your payout. The Romeo wild could also award another free spin, while the Lovers’ Win Spin guarantees a winner featuring the top-paying symbol. With Five of a Kind, you’re definitely going to get five of a kind in the spin. Finally, the Bonus variation triggers one of the main bonus features.

Land three bonus symbols in the base game to access a picking round. This will require you to choose a bottle of poison to decide which feature you’ll play. First, there’s the Star Crossed Lovers 10 free spins, which are played out over two machines. Here, heart symbols land on one reel, then duplicate and appear in the same position on the other reel before transforming into matching symbols. The final result forms the basis for the payout calculation.

The second feature is Juliet’s Wheel of Fortune, which gives you the opportunity to collect multipliers. Should you light up three hearts during a spin, you’ll get an extra reward. The big money section on the wheel is particularly high-paying.

The third feature is Romeo’s Mystery Win feature. This is yet another picking round, but this time with shields. You’ll need to find the tragic hero’s bride behind one of them to win some cash.

Other Romeos and Juliets

This may be an unusual choice of theme, but it is not entirely unique. Let’s face it, everything has already been done before to some extent, and this is no exception. So, if you are a diehard fan of the play and film version, there are a couple of other online slots you can try which also feature the two protagonists.

2016 saw the release of Romeo and Juliet by Pragmatic Play. The slot sports a medium level of variance, a 96% RTP, a 5×3 layout, 25 paylines and a maximum win of 125,000 coins. Another one you might want to have a look at is Book of Romeo and Juliet by Bally Wulff. This also hit the small screens in 2016 (perhaps it was an unofficial year of love slots) and has some similar features: a 96% RTP, a medium level of variance, a 5×3 layout and a maximum win of 10,000 coins. This time, though, the slot contains just ten paylines, plus some nice filmic-style graphics that really add to the sense of Italian life in Shakespeare’s time.

Pros and Cons

If you like as many features as possible rammed into your game, then this is definitely one for you. There’s so much going on here that it can give you a headache. And with so many avenues to explore, you could spend longer playing this than you might take to watch a full-length version of the play itself. However, at 92% RTP, the payout percentage to the punter can’t be considered the steadiest, even just among the Romeo and Juliet slots.

The graphics leave a little to be desired, too – think overly Mills-and-Boon-style cheesy, with more red hearts than a card shop on Valentine’s day. While this Romeo & Juliet video slot might be a little Marmite (you’ll either love it or hate it), those who like a game that’s busy with bonus and picking rounds will find it’s well worth a play.
