Within this review what you’ll find is that the quality of Hot Gems is hardly in dispute. But what is a little more up for debate is where exactly Hot Gems fits within the growing Playtech game catalogue.

Mining for Online Slots Glory

The game is themed around a mine where you are tasked with prospecting gems and other fun goodies, which can trigger some lofty payouts should luck fall in your favour. You determine the number of autospins you want (up to 99) at the beginning of the game and set your bet via similar means. Your minimum total bet in Hot Gems is 5.00, with a maximum bet of 125.00 sure to appease the high rollers out there.

You’ll see plenty of interesting mining-related symbols within this game, including a bearded miner, a lantern, a prospector’s pick, different colored gems, and a coal trolley. Believe it or not, the biggest wins don’t come from the gems, which is certainly somewhat counterintuitive to the name. The symbol you really want is the miner, which pays 100.00 for 3, 250.00 for 4, and 5000.00 for 5.

When the Reels Come Tumbling Down

Every reel spin in Hot Gems comes with plenty of possible permutations. If you’re lucky enough to hit a win, you’ll see an exploding matching combo on the screen. Symbols will the fall down and take up the empty squares, allowing you to keep winning until no new winning combos are left. This feature really gives this medium variance title an added dimension, as it is arguably the stand out moment in Hot Gems.

Free Spins to Find the Wins

You’ll only hit the wild on the middle three reels here. It, of course, replaces other symbols to give you winning combinations on active paylines. That being said, it can’t take the place of Hot Gems or the Free Spins symbol. There’s also a Free Games symbol that triggers free spins. With three of them in any position on reels one, three, and five, you’ll get 15 free spins with the collapsing multiplier feature. Unfortunately, you cannot re-trigger free spins, but it’s still an exciting feature nonetheless.

Finally, there’s the scatter symbol, which is associated with moderate, but also regular, payouts. The scatter icon doesn’t need to be on an active payline to become active, and they pay out no matter what configuration they’re in. Overall, scatter symbols take an obvious backseat in Hot Gems, as its position on the reels is nothing more than secondary.

Deep Amidst the Rock

Hats off to Playtech, as they have once again designed a control panel that perfectly suits the game in question. Set within the stone of the mine, each button is themed perfectly to the game and actually adds a little bit of extra fun to the experience. At the end of the day, buttons are just buttons, but it always helps to have something nice look at.

Hot Gems Brings the Heat!

Playtech has offered up another winner with Hot Gems video slot. Featuring three different bonus icons, which keep the game interesting, and collapsing reels to up the excitement, as such it’s certainly a unique experience. Unfortunately, on the downside, paylines cannot be adjusted and gems are only linked with average sized payouts.

Regardless of its misgivings, we definitely recommend the title to all players of slots, no matter what your gameplay experience. We find that the extra features make the game a little more face-paced, and therefore a little more exciting. Despite the relatively low payouts, Hot Gems still a title that is sure to keep you coming back.
