Being a new release, the return to player is unknown at the time of review. While you can’t yet guarantee a steady return here, judging by other games and Novomatic’s style it’s likely to be decent.

What you can be sure of is that Viking and Dragon is a mythical adventure packed with magical armour, regal royals, ancient relics and a hunt for gold. The layout is a 5×3-reel screen with 25 paylines as well as a popular gamble feature. Here you can play for real money with bets starting from just 0.20 per spin. This is a good slot all-round for both the high rollers and those wagering more modest amounts. Moreover, it may prove particularly interesting for anyone who loves a bit of Norse history.

Plunder and Power From This Odd Couple

It’s quite a coup to find Vikings and dragons in the same place in a slot game (and even more so in real life). Vikings in particular often feature as comic heroes, taking the lead in a wide range of fairy tale slots. Dragons too have become increasingly popular on-screen creatures, especially since the high-profile TV blockbuster Game of Thrones elevated them to superstar status. We all want a dragon as an influential friend now.

The fearsome human warriors hailing from the north made quite a mark on history and geography, plundering their way through the countries lying to the south of their own homeland. With their trademark red beards, horned helmets and stocky appearance, they are a recognisable icon of the past. But the burning question here is, will this Viking enable you to do some plundering at the online casinos?

Viking and Dragon by Novomatic – also known as Greentube – is the creation of a reliable brand that has been around for 38 years. Novomatic has since become the largest manufacturer of land-based casino slot machines globally. From its headquarters in Austria, the company covers 70 countries with more than 19,000 staff, and boasts a wide range of ubiquitous slots.

Famous titles from Novomatic with which you may already be familiar include Book of Ra and Lucky Lady’s Charm. Often, these games are so frequently played that deluxe or revised versions of the original games are created to meet demand for the theme. While they may not be at the forefront of modern innovation, these games do offer familiarity for their players, plus high quality and the potential for some big payouts. Viking and Dragon is no exception.

Unlock the Treasure

It is the Viking’s bits and pieces that represent the highest prizes on this board, presumably because the dragon’s lack of opposable thumbs means he doesn’t have his own stuff. The armour, helmet, spear and hammer are all high-value symbols, but it’s the big man himself who’s top dog, achieving a small reward for landing him once or twice across reels and 200 times your bets for five on a line.

In case you nap mid-game and miss it, you’ll still know you’ve hit this winning combination with an entertaining, brief video section. The shield symbol offers prizes ranging from 12x to 600x your bet and is the wild symbol, substituting for all others bar the treasure chest scatter. Extra wild shields may be added randomly after each spin, so look out for anything between three and a whopping 15 more appearing on those reels.

Land three, four, or five treasure chest scatters to get 40x, 100x, or a massive 500x your bet alongside 8, 12 or 20 free spins. You also stand to reveal a win multiplier of between 2x and 5x at this point, which will be added to any winnings during the free spins round – where the feature can still be activated, adding an extra 2, 3, 4 or 5 spins into the mix. This is a treasure chest you most certainly do want to unlock.

If that’s not enough excitement for you, why not gamble your winnings? This gamble feature is a regular part of Novomatic slots, giving you the option to double your prize with a fun extra game. Here you must click the screen as a playing card flashes between red and black. Pick the “right” one to win, otherwise you lose. It’s as simple as that: a pure 50/50 gamble to add some spice into proceedings for the chance to land higher prizes.

Other Games From Novomatic

If you love high variance, try Book of Ra Deluxe. This is the slot that put Novomatic on the map, and while it’s quite straightforward with only ten paylines, it is loved the world over. It is different to Viking and Dragon in terms of layout, as well as in the fact that it’s the expanding wilds making you money here. Overall, Novomatic’s trademark design will be very easy to spot here.

If it’s armoured warrior action you’re after, the A Tale of Treasure and Glory video slot may just tickle your fancy. It has five reels, 20 paylines, a free spins bonus game and a keen sense of historical adventure. Plus, in true Novomatic style, you can opt to gamble your prize after each win. A Tale of Treasure and Glory is classed as a low-limit slot suitable for low spenders, given that bets start at just 0.20 per spin.

Go for Gold With a Gamble

Available to play on mobile, tablet or the good old-fashioned desktop, Viking and Dragon looks set to be as popular as other Novomatic games, especially given the brand’s loyal fan base. It’s a fun, cheery theme which might appear somewhat incongruous with dragons and Vikings. But test this one out, make full use of some big wagers and get click-happy with the gamble button. One for the gamblers and risk-takers, this slot will have your knuckles as white as you like.
