Love can be many things but in Book of Romeo & Julia it’s a love heart and a string of red roses wrapped around a gold logo. In other words, we’re talking schmaltzy, mushy love, the sort that will instantly repel some players and amuse others.

For the Love of Slots

In Shakespeare’s original tragi-comedy – with an emphasis on the tragedy – the protagonists were of course Romeo and Juliet. In this slot conversion, we have a Julia instead, which can be thought of as a modern take on the original name. The two star-crossed lovers look pin-up perfect in the game, but alas they’re destined never to enjoy their happy ending. If the original play didn’t make that clear, the lethal looking dagger that lies on the reels will.

Book of Romeo & Julia is a 10 payline slot that comes with the option to half this number if desired. The line bet ranges, and provides a minimum total bet of 0.10 and maximum of 20.00. If you don’t have enough credits to play at maximum bet, by the way, the game will automatically select the highest maximum you can play with. There’s an auto spin button and also a turbo spin option which is buried within a menu option in the top left of the screen.

Bad Romance

Book of Romeo & Julia is a slot that revels in its trashiness and it’s all the more enjoyable for that. If you take this game seriously, you’ll suffocate under the crushing intensity of love gone wrong. If you’re prepared to embrace the ridiculousness of it it all however you’ll have a riot. Much of the symbols are made up of playing cards, a move which always feels like a cop out, especially when they haven’t even been customised to match the theme of the slot.

This is how Bally Wulff tend to roll though, and at least the handful of proprietary symbols they have incorporated look the part. The dagger is worth 450 for five, as is a letter with a wax seal. Julia, pensively resting her chin on her hand, is worth 3,000 for five. Romeo, in comparison, is worth a mere 1,200. Scatter is the book which features in the slot’s name. It’s also the wild symbol and is worth 1,200 for five. The other special symbol is an open book, which is a bonus symbol and will help you secure 10 free spins.

Young Love and Old Stories

Most of the wins you accrue in Book of Romeo & Julia will be paid out as line bet multipliers, so the higher your stake, the greater your return. This is most evident when you land three or more scatters in view, which will apply a 200x multiplier for five. At the same time, this book icon will play the role of wild, substituting for other symbols.

There aren’t many developers who fuse their scatter and wild symbols into one, but it’s a move BALLY WULFF Games & Entertainment GmbH have tried a few times with success. When you come to collect free spins – again with the aid of the scatter/wild – the special bonus symbol of the open book will appear and will expand to cover an entire reel, boosting your chances of winning.

Persian Dreams is Similar

The closest game to Book of Romeo & Julia in terms of gameplay is Persian Dreams or Magic Book, both of which are by Merkur/Bally Wulff. Book of Romeo & Julia is a medium variance game with an RTP of 96% just like these two slots.

It’s surprising there haven’t been more attempts to create Romeo & Juliet themed slots. You probably will find something out there, most likely at a bingo website, where there tend to be slots designed to appeal to female players first and foremost. You’ll also find other games there that mimic the Mills & Boon vibe of this deliberately trashy slot.

Love It?

Book of Romeo & Julia is what it is. In other words, if you can get with the theme of this game – ironically or otherwise – you’ll enjoy it, fleetingly at least. There’s not much longevity built in because there’s not enough going on in this game to retain your interest. Graphics, audio, animations and features are all unexceptional, making Book of Romeo & Julia one for Shakespeare and Mills & Boon devotees only.
