When you ask online slots fans to name their favourite software developers, you can be sure that Playtech is going to receive plenty of mentions. Going from strength to strength, this is one developer that certainly knows a thing or two about quality. Countless games from Playtech feature on critic’s top picks lists, which is probably why the latest release from the company is so surprising. Golden Games is a brand new Olympic themed title that sadly has all the makings of a shameless cash-in.
We understand that when a major event rolls around the casino software developers of the world want to jump on the trend. We do understand this from a business perspective, but seldom does it result in anything worth playing. Sadly, Golden Games from Playtech does very little to buck this trend.
Golden and Garish
We are not really sure where to start with the theme and design of Golden Games, as it’s pretty generic. Playtech have an amazing reputation for creating unique games, so seeing this title under the brand’s banner is actually a little disheartening to be honest. In keeping with the name, everything in the game is emblazed in gold, but in our opinion this all looks rather tacky. What doesn’t help matters is the fact that the reels take up the entire screen, which is a clear move to cover up the lack of detail elsewhere.
The game hardly gets any better when you explore what’s on the reels, as all you see is a selection of generic sporting images. Yes, many of the symbols have a gold coating to them, but that really isn’t enough in our eyes. Graphically, you can’t get around the fact that Golden Games is a Playtech title that has a really flat UI.
Throw on Your Running Shoes
At its core, Golden Games is a low to medium variance title, with the action spread across 25 paylines, 5 reels, and 3 rows. Those credentials are pretty much where the action begins and ends, as the game is pretty bland in execution. What doesn’t help matters is just how ridged the game is when it comes to wagering.
While we never loaded this game up expecting total control flexibility, we did expect to have an advanced input into the bettering approach. Players are locked at using 25 paylines. This actually makes the game super expensive in our eyes, with the minimum wager being 2.50 and the maximum wager being 25,000.00. With costs like these, Golden Games has the power to eat up your bankroll in no time.
Take Your Place on the Podium
Golden Games is a costly real money slots title, so you would expect it to come packed with bonus features? Well, you would be completely wrong, as this game has barely anything to offer. You have the wilds and scatters in the Golden Games logo and the Olympic flame, but that’s pretty much it. So, if you like free spins this might be for you, but if you want anything beyond this for your money, you’re pretty much out of luck here.
Beaten by a Photo Finish
Rounding off what is a pretty half-baked cash-in, Golden Games features an overly busy control panel that doesn’t really do the game any favours. It appears that Playtech were in a hurry to get this game to market and simply pasted the control panel together. Tough to use and annoying to navigate, the control setup in Golden Games is just plain bad.
Golden Games Is a Far from the Gold Standard!
We are huge Playtech fans, having followed the developer and its creations for years. So you can imagine our disappointment when we discovered Golden Games, a title that appears to have been cobbled together simply to take advantage of the Olympic fever that is currently sweeping throughout the world.
Generic, cliché, and highly forgettable, trust us when we say that you have much better things to do with your time than play this overly expensive Playtech release.
