      The Flintstones Slot Review

Yabba dabba doo! Everyone’s favourite stone age family are back as Playtech give The Flintstones the video slot treatment. Wilma, Barney, Fred and the rest of the crew are all present in this colourful 5-reel slot.

Who isn’t familiar with The Flintstones? An entire generation grew up watching the cartoon, and given that it’s since been respun and given the reboot treatment, it’s safe to assume that there’s a whole lotta life left in the stone age family yet. The characters were probably best known for their modern conveniences made using the resources that were available in the stone age – stone mostly, with a bit of wood.

The Flintstones slot is rich with symbols that accord to this future-prehistoric model including a telephone whose receiver is an animal horn. The reels, set within a 5×3 grid, are framed in wood and set against a suitably stone age backdrop, with boulders, mountains and trees aplenty. To the left of the reels, a bird perches on a jutting out branch, watching proceedings and occasionally getting restless during spells of no play.

      Yabba Dabba Do Time

Playtech are fond of stating the number of paylines in their slots according to the number of theoretical ways to win. As such, The Flintstones is technically a 5-reel slot with 1,024 paylines. In practice, this latter number is irrelevant – it’s not as if you can adjust the number of paylines in this game. You can adjust the coin value though from 0.01 to 1. As a consequence, it’s safe to say that The Flintstones isn’t the biggest paying game you’ll ever encounter.

Set the stake to the maximum 1 and you’ll discover that each spin costs you 40. Ah, so The Flintstones has 40 paylines. Why couldn’t Playtech just say so? Hover over the button marked Auto Play and you’ll be able to adjust the number of spins from 10 to 99. There’s also a turbo mode option for those in a hurry.

      Stone Age Hierarchy

A few playing card values make up the lower value symbols in the game, but the remaining symbols are all plucked straight from the cartoon. Wilma and Betty aren’t worth as much as their male counterparts, but that’s just how the patriarchy worked in the Stone Age. Back then it was less of a wage gap and more of an age gap – one that started around 2.5 million years ago. It wasn’t until much later that feminism was invented and the world became a more equanimous place.

Five Barney Rubbles are worth 200 and 5 Fred Flintstones are worth 400. The most valuable symbol in the game is in fact Dino, the pink dinosaur. That’s because he plays the role of wild symbol and is worth 1,000 for 5. The bonus symbol, a stone bowling ball striking some pins, will appear on reels 1, 3 and 5 to activate the Bedrock Bowling Bonus.

      Great Gazoo

The stone house symbol will dispense free spins when it appears on reels 2, 3 and 4. At this stage, you’ll be entered into one of three free games modes, depending on the number of bonus symbols you landed. You’ll get 5 free games with Wilma Wild, 10 free games with the Dino Multiplier and 12 free games with The Great Gazoo. Each of these bonuses works in a slightly different way.

The Great Gazoo will act as a wild, randomly turning other symbols into wilds. Wilma Wild will use a baby mammoth as a hoover to vacuum up wilds that land on the reels and Dino will dig for bones, with every one he unearths boosting your win multiplier.

      What Else Is out There?

There aren’t a lot of games out there that compare directly to The Flintstones, but in terms of features and gameplay, IGT’s Dangerous Beauty is a reasonably close match, followed by Microgaming’s Tarzan.

      Get in Bed with Fred

It’s virtually impossible to dislike this slot. In taking on The Flintstones, Playtech have done the cartoon series proud, devising a game that captures the quirks of the various characters and the modern stone age technology that made the TV series so successful in the first place. Regardless of how you fare in the game, The Flintstones is an undisputed winner.
