Golden Planet opens with a stunning video package, which is almost akin to something which would be shown as the introduction to a 90s kids cartoon. In fact, the whole game is very much relative to such, offering up sci-fi imagery of distant planets and humans exploring unknown space locations, but all created in a very cartoon way. It’s apparent that the characters of this game have discovered the planet made of gold, but they’re about to get a shock from the inhabiting alien creatures. As such, you’ll be playing the game against a backdrop of distant stars, but with the unfortunate sound of Novomatic’s inclusive arcade noises that seem to be present in the majority of their catalogue.
Blast Off!
Well, you won’t find any rockets on the reels of this game, but the icons that you will find are all very space-themed. There’s the male and female astronauts, all decked out in their uniforms to be able to breathe on the golden planet. There’s also two different types of aliens, one which resembles the green, antenna-bearing creature we’ve all come to label aliens as, and the other which has a much more robotic visage to it. In addition, there’s an icon of the planet made from gold, naturally, and another of a blue world with rings around it. Finally, A, J, K, Q, 9 and 10 all make their own appearances here too.
The game itself is played on a five reel and three row layout, which provides a regular interface for gamers to spin. You’re able to choose the amount of pay lines to be active per spin, which start from a single one and can be altered to include three, five, seven or nine at a maximum. A single credit in this product is equal to $0.01, but the amount of credits played per spin is changeable, going from one per line to a maximum of 100 per line. Therefore, if this is maxed out and the number pay lines are set at nine, you’ll be able to place a maximum overall wager of $900 per round.
Beam Up the Special Features
There is a wild symbol included in the game, which will substitute for all other icons on the reels, except for the scatters. The wild is represented by the space shuttle which is setting down on the planet, and if you spin five of these on a winning pay line, you can win a maximum pay out of $900,000!
The aforementioned blue planet with rings is the game’s scatter symbol. This pays out wherever it appears on the reels, being exempt from pay line rules. If you manage to spin three into view, you’ll be rewarded with a total of 15 freespins of the reels. This round will also include a three times multiplier.
Novomatic have also seen fit to include their own gamble feature into this product as well, which will give all players the opportunity to strongly increase any winnings. The feature presents a side game which is triggered at the end of any winning combination formed in the main game. Gamers can either choose to collect the winnings as they are or go ahead and play the game. Doing so will offer up a deck of playing cards, and you must guess the colour of the next card to be turned over. If you make a correct guess, your winnings will be doubled and you can try to guess again to increase them even further. Making an incorrect guess will see your winnings disappear though.
A Summary of Sci-Fi Wonders
Golden Planet, while not being hugely spectacular on the whole, does manage to distance itself from other Novomatic games. It first of all has an introductory video package welcoming players to the game, and secondly, it has a theme that works really well for it and hasn’t been neglected too much by the developer. Yes, the addition of the frustrating soundtrack could have been avoided and changed for something more appropriate, but in the end, the game offers up a compelling product with special features to leave you wanting for more.
