Swashbuckling is something we all long to do, right? Having grown up with stories of pirates out on the seas, and watching big blockbuster movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, all of us are wanting a piece of the action. If you play Magellan from EGT, you can get a small taste of what it’s like to be one with the waters, but without fear of mutinies or ghost ships attacking.
This title is apparently one of the brand’s newer real cash slots, and yet it doesn’t appear to have any mod cons like most contemporary casino games do. In fact, there’s a dated, vintage quality about it that actually works in its favour. What better way to explore the sea than through an authentic experience?
Calm and Steady Waters
Figuring out where to go on your journey won’t be too taxing for you, for the volatility inside this 50 winlines game is about average for a slot machine of its size. You’ll find that you make regular wins, albeit not large ones, with the option to gamble always not too far behind.
What is more, you’ll be able to savour the limited but decent variance that the brand has laid out for you inside the paytable. Granted, this game may not be as interesting as Aztec Glory, where there was 10 free spins and a special symbol, but you’ll still get some bang for your buck.
Swab the Decks, Arrr!
When it comes to the theme of the game, it’s obviously nautical, as demonstrated by the ships and harbour in the background of the 5 reels matrix. However, there’s a lot more to this slot machine than simply implying a game, it’s about whether the brand has managed to achieve a sense of atmosphere.
In our humble opinion, while EGT have tried to make their title as absorbing as possible, they’ve failed to do so due to how flat the imagery employed is – there’s no tangibility to be found here. Not every game needs to be all bells and whistles, but for a new game that’s meant to be a contemporary video slot, we expected a lot more than a static interface. Even the symbols upon the grid aren’t as graphically sound as they could have been.
Travelling the World
You see that globe on the reels, the one that looks like something you’d see in a posh, stuffy old study? Well that happens to be the scatter icon, and with its help you get to play seven rounds on the house. However, for that to have any chance of happening, you need to land the tile on the second, third and fourth reels, all at the same time. Although more challenging to achieve, it’s more than possible.
When this happens, you’ll be taken to the extra games, with a counter informing you on how many rounds you have left. It’s very basic, with no extras thrown in to spice up the adventure. We find that we tire of the feature, even though it costs us nothing once we’re in the level. It just lacks any form of presence.
Big Spender
Magellan might have been disappointing when it comes to bonuses, but where it excels is in the jackpot department, as there are four levels of money to get your hands on. Though of course, only one of them will be your final prize.
The Jackpot Cards appear to be in all EGT slots, or at least all the ones we’ve played, and so if you’ve come across them before you’ll know what to expect. You need to match three symbols of the same card suit to be awarded the money for that level; it’s very simple. How much you win can dramatically alter with each playthrough, but the value has been known to reach over 100,000 credits.
Maiden Voyage
When we set off on the Magellan, we had no idea it would likely be our last time playing the game – we had expected so much more, but received very little for our wishful thinking. As you’ll have probably gathered for yourselves, this is a slot machine that lacks longevity, and while the money can be good, the gameplay isn’t. Consequently, you’ll tire of the slot before you reach the dizzying heights of the Jackpot Cards.
