Even before we started playing Ramses II, we were already thinking, “Oh no! Another slot game based on ancient Egypt!”. And it’s true, the theme has been taken on and attacked from every angle imaginable. Almost all games developers have had their stab at providing a genuinely impressive product surrounding such. In comparison to the vast majority of Egypt-themed games out there, Novomatic’s Ramses II unfortunately comes up quite short. It’s not a specifically bad game to play, but when there are products out there boasting several bonus rounds and atmospheric soundtracks, for example, you can’t help but wonder what the provider was thinking when they designed this game. The fact that it has that awful piece of arcade music included in it is enough to make us stop playing almost immediately.
Step Back to Ancient Times…
This product features five reels and three rows worth of a layout, presenting its players with a decent and standard interface. The reels are filled with icons which are mostly relevant to its theme, so you’ll find yourself spinning through images of pyramids, the sphinx, Horus, golden eagles, a Pharaoh, camels and scarab beetles, so all the general symbols are there. These are accompanied by other standards such as the A, J, K, Q, 9 and 10. The icons are designed in a nice enough way, and do bring a sort of finesse to the product on the whole.
Alongside this, Novomatic have added a total of nine separate pay lines to the game. Players can select how many of these they would prefer to wager on, with the ability to start from a single pay line before moving up to three, five, seven and then finally, the full nine. There’s also a changeable coin value included in the game, which is able to be switched between $0.50 to $1 and then up to $2 as a maximum. As an extra added perk, you can change around the amount of coins you’re able to wager per line, which starts from as little as one, and from there can be altered up to the maximum of 100. This will therefore provide you with a maximum overall wager possibility of $900.
…And View the Specialities on the Lines
As far as added bonus features go, Ramses II isn’t exactly bursting at the seams with them. However, it does provide players with a scatter icon, which is in the shape of the scarab beetle. This will pay out wherever it should appear on the reels, with the maximum prize being for five of them, which provides $450,000. In addition, should you spin three or more of them onto the reels at any time, you’ll be rewarded with 15 freespins. During this round, all pay outs are multiplied by three.
This is the only real additional feature that Novomatic has added, apart from its ever present gamble round. This is actually triggered at the end of every win that you create within the base game, and it will provide you with the chance of increasing your winnings by playing a small side game. You’re given two choices before this. You can either take your winnings as they are, or alternatively, you can play the round. Choosing to play will take you to a new screen.
The new screen will present you with a deck of playing cards, and your job here is to guess whether the next card to be turned over will be black or red. You make your choice by pressing either the red or black button, and if your guess is correct, you will see your winnings doubled. You’ll then be given another chance to guess the next card to try and increase them again. Alternatively, you can collect the funds.
Take a Gamble on Ramses II
The theme of ancient Egypt has provided the online gaming world with many spectacular games. It’s a shame that this isn’t really one of them, and instead it offers up a mediocre take on the whole genre. The inclusion of Novomatic’s terrible music choices further deteriorate the product into the lower ranks, and if it wasn’t for the generally decent graphics that have been incorporated, it could be considered one of the worst.
