We have to admit that we’re usually quite conscious about accessing any kind of game or product with the word ‘retro’ involved in it. However, we were quite pleasantly surprised when we spun a few rounds of the Retro Reels: Diamond Glitz game from Microgaming. It’s true that it does have a sort of classic slot machine vibe to it, although it’s presented on a modern day video slot screen. As such, it manages to merge the old very nicely with the new in order to form an intriguing and compelling online slot game. There’s a sort of magical sounding piece of music that plays whenever you spin the reels, which admittedly does give the game a little bit more of an atmosphere. It’s not entirely clear as to the theme or basis behind this game, although we do find the siren sound alerting you to the re-spin feature a little frustrating. Overall though, we can say that this game is a really nice addition to the Microgaming catalogue, and features some nice quality graphics and animations.

Glitz and Glamour on the Reels

The interface of this game is presented on a five reel and three row layout, so you won’t have anything alternate to become accustomed to with it. It’s upon these reels that you’ll find the various different symbols, which are very much presented in their retro status. So, you’ll first get to see the traditional cherries, as well as the diamond, blue bell icon. In addition to this, there’s a red number 7 icon as well as three different BAR symbols in the form of a single, a double and a triple. Furthermore, you’ll find three diamond icons, a single one, a double one and a triple one again, while finally, you’ll find a diamond-coloured dollar sign.

There’s a few different special features included on the reels, starting with the freespins round. For a game incorporating ‘retro’ and ‘glitz’ as words in its title, you’re actually able to spin through several rounds of a very compelling product. The biggest part about it is that it’s fun – if you can get past the noises of the respin alert – and we’re all for being able to claim a big jackpot in freespins mode as well.
