We’ve often wondered about ancient civilisations, especially those of the Latin American locations. The Aztec, of course, were certain ethnic groups who were based in central Mexico, and they dominated the lands between the 14th and 16th centuries. These people began to migrate into Mesoamerica from northern Mexico in the 6th century, and they populated the area of central Mexico, forcing out the speakers of Oto-Manguean languages as they spread their influence southwards. These people merged with one another, and provided the foundation for the Aztec culture, with the civilisation rising to power in such locations as Tula, Hidalgo. Of course, the power centre of the Aztec people became Azcapotzalco, now the northern part of Mexico City. It was with this culture and theme in mind that Microgaming decided to create the online slot game entitled, Golden Princess, bringing together imagery of Aztec royalty, animals and lots of gold and treasures.

The Princess’s Kingdom

On the whole, the layout of this game is very much similar to what standard online video slots offer up. Five reels and three rows provide players with the basic interface, and it’s upon these reels that you’ll be able to see the various different symbols. These start with the frequently seen A, J, K, Q and 10 icons – all of which have been designed in a very glistening gold colour. Joining them are four other standard icons in the form of a black panther and a spotted jaguar, while two human characters, presumably the king and queen of the Aztec tribe, provide the other two. Extra icons exist within the game as well, in order to provide it with its special features.

Alongside this, you’ll find that Golden Princess has also had a total of 25 different pay lines included in it. These have been fixed in place by Microgaming, so there’s no way of adjusting them at all. However, players do have the opportunity to change around the amount of the wager that is placed per spin. This is done simply by using the arrow buttons at either side of the ‘Bet’ box. Here, you’ll be given the option of selecting an amount between the minimum of $2.50 and the maximum of $25 per round, and this is therefore the maximum overall wager that you’re able to place.

Obey the Aztec Princess!

One thing that Microgaming is especially great at is injecting games with a bit more pizazz as far as special features go. Golden Princess is no different, and the specialities of this one start with its wild icon. This is represented b y the ancient temple symbol, and as a wild icon it will substitute for all other symbols on the reels, except for the scatter. In the base game, this can show up on any of the reels and it will also award a random multiplier when included in a winning combination. This multiplier can be either times two or times three.

There’s also a gamble feature included in the game as well, and this is triggered after every win you form in the main game. Accessing this feature will give you the opportunity to either double or quadruple your winnings. You’ll be presented with a playing card, face down, and you simply need to guess what kind of card it will be when it’s turned over. A correct colour guess will double your winnings, while a correct card suit guess will quadruple them. An incorrect guess will see them all lost.

Finally, there’s also a scatter symbol included in the game, which is the treasure chest overflowing with gold and jewels. Three, four or five of these showing up on the reels in any location will provide you with 10, 20 or 30 freespins, respectively. During the freespins round, each scatter icon showing up will award a mystery pay out of up to 10 times your total bet. Furthermore, all wild symbols will be stacked during this round as well.

A Look Back in History

We enjoy video slots that have a historical theme to them, especially when they’re based on other civilisations and cultures. Golden Princess is certainly an entertaining game to play, and features some wonderful graphics and animations, as well as some intriguing special additions.
