Shamrocks, the luck of the Irish, jigging leprechauns – each of these concepts has been done to death in slot games. Casino games specialist IGT is obviously hoping to wring one last bit of worth from the genre, though, hence the release of Shamrockers Eire to Rock.

This 5-reel video slot boasts 20 paylines and features rock n’ roll leprechauns and Dynamic Stacks on each and every reel. There’s no getting around the fact that this is yet another Irish-luck themed slot game, but considering there’s a bit of a twist – in the form of a hell-raising rock band – you can’t help but warm to it.

Rocking symbols

The icons in Shamrockers Eire to Rock are nothing if not amusing. The leprechaun super band comprises a singer, who sports a huge orange quiff, sideburns Elvis would be proud of and a bushy beard. He’s also rocking a shamrock medallion (naturally enough), a green shirt and a camel-hair jacket fringed with green and gold.

The lead guitarist is obviously based on Slash from Guns N’ Roses; he wears sunglasses and a large green top hat. He’s also wearing a Libertines-esque red and green Grenadiers jacket and his guitar of choice – to our semi-trained eyes at least – is a Gretsch. The band also includes a violinist – a portly gent in ridiculous golfing trousers sporting a beard that covers his whole torso and orange slugs for eyebrows – and a female drummer wearing black leather pants, a green boob tube, a green hat, gold earrings and black fingerless gloves.

Other symbols, incidentally, include the usual playing cards – 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace – a bonus Encore ticket stub and a four-leaf clover.

The game is extremely colourful, with action taking place against a background of hills and fells, shot through with light from a rainbow. The word Shamrocks is emblazoned in green above the reels.

Green gameplay

Shamrockers Eire to Rock utilises a Dynamic Stacks feature, whereby each reel benefits from large stacks of identical symbols. Before every free spin, a symbol is chosen at random to fill every reel’s stack for – in theory, at least – big wins.

The best chance you have at winning some serious dough is, of course, by triggering the free spins bonus feature itself, which is activated when you land three or more bonus symbols anywhere on the reels. Do this and you’ll be given four free spins, and a different band member will take to the stage, becoming a Dynamic Stack for each individual spin.

For the first free spin, it’ll be the turn of the violinist; for the second, it’s the female drummer, and for the third, it’s the Slash-esque guitarist. Lastly, the medallion-wearing lead singer takes up his role as Dynamic Stack. Look out, also, for the Encore icon on the final free spin, as this re-triggers the feature, presenting you with an additional four free spins.

The Encore feature, incidentally, occurs 50% of the time. It can also occur multiple times, with as many as 240 free spins available. Lastly, the golden Encore ticket icon acts as wild during this feature. You can win up to 625x your initial stake on every free spin!

The gameplay, incidentally, is excellent. When you hit a matching combination of band members, for instance, the band member will start gyrating in his reel. The band member will then perform a celebratory little jig while Irish music plays.

Green or gold?

Shamrockers Eire to Rock is a high variance game, so you should certainly anticipate some dry spells: when you go to the well, water won’t be there every time. To get the most out of this game, you’ll need to be patient and wait for your luck to kick in. All in all, this is a fun game with a solid theme and some nifty features. What’ve you got to lose?
