If the success of the Gladiator film or the more recent popularity of Game of Thrones (see also the GOT Slot) is anything to go by, the Roman Empire is as popular as it has ever been as source material for great entertainment.

WMS have tapped into that theory with this slot game, Plataea, which takes players into the heart of the Battle of Plataea of 479 BC. As a result, you will be expected to wage war with all manner of opponents in your quest to win those big money prizes!

Plataea is a traditional five-reel slot game that features 50 paylines and a host of bonuses and special features, including a Free Spins Bonus and wild and scattered symbols. It also utilises the fantastic Hot Hot Super Respin feature as well (more on that later).

Let Battle Commence

As previously mentioned, Plataea is set amongst the dynasty of the Roman Empire, and so the symbols used within the game follow suit. There are swords and armour, war ships, coins and warriors to do battle with.

The wild symbol, which is the soldier, can substitute for all others except the feature and will appear on reels 2, 3, 4 or 5. Whilst ultimately there is no chance of spinning five wilds, there is still ample opportunity for some great wins; particularly as the wild is held during the Hot Hot Super Respin round.

The reveal symbol, which is the gold shield with the letter ‘V’ on it, is an interesting one as it will reveal any symbol at random, bar the wild or feature, and (hopefully) produce some winning lines as a result.

Symbols must appear on adjacent reels, starting from reel 1 and moving right, to create a winning combo, and each spin can be modified to your liking; although each is fixed at 50 paylines, you can change your bet per line with ease.

Choose Your Weapon

Picking up three of the Acropolis feature symbol triggers the Free Spins round, and this is set at 10 freebies from the outset.

Once the reveal symbol appears on all four positions on reel 1 this special bonus will be activated. It awards players with two free respins, and this will hold any reveal or wild symbols in place. The upshot is that this gives you a fantastic opportunity to create more winning combos – particularly matching three or more wilds.

Each reveal symbol will turn into the same random symbol as well, so there is usually a small payout as a bare minimum courtesy of Hot Hot Super Respin. All awards are calculated after the second of the respins, and these are equal to those as described in the paytable for the main game.

Whilst Plataea is fairly basic from a graphical and sound perspective, it’s clear that WMS have surmised that the overall gameplay and generosity of the bonus features on offer far outweighs the importance of super modern graphics in the hearts of most slot gamers.

The inclusion of Hot Hot Super Respins will be enough to persuade most on its own, and being awarded ten free spins straight off the bat heading into the bonus round is a pretty decent number.
