      Spooky House Slot Review

A feast is on its way for all you horror fans out there, for Novomatic has created the 5 reels of Spooky House, a slot machine that pays homage to the ghost tales of old. You can expect creepy goings on, but presented in a much more friendly and less blood curdling way to what other brands produce.

One of the first aspects that strikes us about this title is how unmenacing it is – the brand has made sure that even those players of a squeamish disposition can enjoy the features of this slot machine. What is more, they can do so without having to pay a small fortune, as the bet is a small 30 credits. This may sound steep, but for a Novomatic title it’s actually rather cheap. For that fee you can expect free games, wilds, bumps in the night and 243 ways to play – how horrifyingly brilliant is all that?!

      Vintage Novelette

What we enjoy most about the interface, putting aside the variance for now, is the vintage aesthetic that the company has opted for. As most of us regular Novomatic gamers know, they never tend to pull out all the contemporary stops, choosing to be understated rather than over the top. Therefore, the choice shouldn’t surprise us and yet it does, simply because of how charmingly they’ve executed the design.

Novomatic could have just delivered us a tacky grid and left it at that, but instead they’ve used retro looking images of black cats and houses on top of hills, all in a watercolour effect, to create a vintage novel vibe. We feel like we’re leafing through the pages of some aged horror book, rather than playing a real cash slot machine.

      Smashing Pumpkins

As we’ve already commented on, there’s a couple of extras to really throw yourself into when playing Spooky House. However, what you need to know before getting too excited is that you need to be playing with the most number of winlines. This in itself presents problems, as according to the control panel the top amount is 30, and yet when that amount is set gamers will find they’re playing with 243 ways to win. Having that many options is by no means bad, but it’s very confusing for users.

Once you’ve unlocked that top tier of the betting range, which will set you back between 30 and 9,000 credits, then you’ll be able to start carving and smashing those pumpkins. The pumpkins are the scatter of the game, and thus they bestow onto you up to 15 free games whenever they appear in a formation of three or over. As if that wasn’t good enough, Novomatic have thrown in a sweetener that all wins during that time are doubled in size, ensuring you always leave Spooky House happier than when you entered.

      Haunted for All Eternity

Spooky House is a great little slot machine to add to your collection, but don’t sell yourself short by not exploring all that’s out there – the horror genre is big within the slots industry. Once you scratch the surface and look beyond the cutesy titles, you discover a world of horror, delivering frantic tales like Haunted Nights, a story from Genesis Gaming.

Like Spooky House, it too is a 243 ways to play and has 5-reels to keep the momentum going as you explore, however they start to deviate from one another when you look at the bonuses. Haunted Nights has many more features, most of which are pick me bonuses, thus including a level of engagement that Novomatic doesn’t have. What is more, they deliver a more modern alternative, which some younger users may find more appealing. Personally, we like our horror old school, but it’s whatever floats your boat.

      Get Your Spook On

Even though we’ve enjoyed our time at Spooky House, we’re happy to see the game come to its conclusion, for the variance here is on the low side. It’s much higher than what you’ll see from true classics like Burning Hot, but that doesn’t mean that the diversity is enough to keep us playing. For that to happen, Novomatic would have to introduce more immersive bonuses, with rounds that actually get us hands on rather than switching off. Nonetheless, for a cheeky punt Spooky House isn’t half bad.
