He was a bold and innovative author between the years of 1619 and 1655, and his work was a part of the libertine literature of this period. Today, he is known as the inspiration behind the drama named after him, written by Edmond Rostand. It is this play that incorporates the character of Roxanne, who is thought to have been based on Bergerac’s cousin, who lived with his sister. The romance between Cyrano and Roxanne is one of complete fiction, as the latter person never actually existed, but in the play about his life, the two of them fall deeply in love.
