      Fort Brave Slot Review

The American Civil War is the setting for Fort Brave, a Bally Wulff slot that’s infused with a whole lot of character. The Civil War was a bloody and arguably pointless conflict, but over a century and a half on its horrors have faded, making it prime fodder for a video slot. They never did tell you at school that as an adult most of your learning would come from playing slots.

Bally Wulff love nothing more than a good historical tale to pin their slots on, and they’ve struck gold with Fort Brave, a game which captures the German developer on a good day. By their standards, this is a sharp and elegant 5-reel slot.

      Fortune Favours the Brave

Fort Brave is based around a fictional fort that provides the setting for a key battle in the Civil War. The skirmish, which divided the US for four years in the 1860s, seems quaint now, but at the time it was a blood-soaked nightmare in which all too many lives were needlessly wasted. Then again, the same could be said of any war. The game launches with a trumpet fanfare and a voiceover announcing its name. This is Fort Brave.

A 5-reel, 50 payline slot, Fort Brave allows you to play with just 25 lines if you like. This is standard practice with Bally Wulff’s slots. The line bet can range from 0.04 to 0.24 which makes for a maximum bet of 12 per spin. There’s a max bet button and an autoplay option but no ability to set the number of spins, as is the case with many slots by other developers. If you’re short on patience, enable turbo spin, an option which is tucked away in the top left of the screen.

      Pistols at Dawn

This game’s developers might be German, but they’ve created a convincingly American slot here, complete with flute music that could easily have been played by a marching band back in the day as they trudged into battle. Behind the reels, the fort which lends the game its name can be made out against a lush bucolic vista complete with woodland and rolling hills.

On the reels, the usual playing card symbols Bally Wulff deploy are complemented by some nice looking Civil War symbols that fetchingly set the scene. There’s a bugle, a drum, a soldier’s hat, a cannon, a pair of crossed US flags with an eagle and finally a soldier. The bugle/drum are worth 120 for five of a kind, exactly half the value of the cannon/hat symbols. Wild is the pair of US flags, substituting for regular playing symbols, and top of the heap is the soldier who’s worth 1,200 for five.

      Fortify Your Wins

The scatter symbol, comprising a wooden guard’s tower from the fort, is worth 240 for five. It’ll prove more useful in notching up free spins however; three symbols anywhere in view are worth 10 spins, four are worth 15 and 5 are worth 20. When collecting free spins, the wild symbol can apply a multiplier to anything you land, resulting in a win of up to 27x your stake.

      Civil Unrest

There aren’t an awful lot of Civil War-themed slots going about, possibly because most developers have wisely concluded that it’s too complex a topic to distil into a video slot. Bally Wulff aren’t like other developers though and aren’t afraid to tackle historic events that are less fashionable.

The closest game to Fort Brave in terms of gameplay is probably Black Beauty or Books & Bulls by the same developer. For something a little different, try RTG’s Battleground which has an RTP of 91-97% depending on the stake you set.

      Brave Attempt

Fort Brave is one of the best games Bally Wulff have released to date. It looks the part and what’s more it sounds the part too, thanks to a soundtrack that’s very much in keeping with the military music of the era. There’s not an awful lot going on in terms of features – free spins are about it – but there’s still enough here to keep you content for a while as you immersive yourself in the geopolitik of 1860s America in all its bloodthirsty glory.
